Jeriau waterfall can be found down the slopes of Fraser's Hill, about 4km away from the town center through a narrow winding road that descends sharply from Smokehouse hotel and viewpoint area. The air here is noticeably warmer, being considerably lower in elevation from the main highland areas. This recreational nature park is very popular with visitors on weekends and holidays, but consequently, has suffered the effects of tourist overdevelopment. The waters are usually silted and muddy, while parts of the stream that feed the waterfall have been dammed with concrete (to build more pools for visitors to bathe and swim).

The stream and pools are mostly small and shallow, not going past waist level at its deepest. The trail that leads from the entrance is broad and well paved, following the river edge alongside frequent rest shelters, benches and even playground areas for children!A series of staircases with guard railings descends steeply to the main falls after 150 meter of foot path. Where the staircase begins, the stream abruptly cascades down several smooth rockfaces, creating a few tiers of small pools. Because of the dense foliage and steep terrain, only the last fall is acessible and clearly viewed.
The waters collect into a large sickly-coloured pool that has been reinforced at the sides with stone walls. A shelter sits at the right to shade visitors on a hot day. After this pool, the stream flows over a few more ugly artifical embankments into additional pools. Entrance to Jeriau is free, but this is a waterfall that has lost its pristine enviroment, with the exception of its surrounding rainforest. After heavy rainfall, the water becomes extremely discoloured and sandy, an indication of poor topography management for eco-tourism. A better waterfall to enjoy would be Sungai Chilling, at the foothills near Kuala Kubu Bharu. |
